On Monday, February 20, 2017 a candlelight prayer vigil was held for Mayor David McCullough and his family on the Cheatham County Courthouse lawn in Ashland City, Tennessee. Diane Lovell Fifth District Cheatham County Commissioner and Valerie Kemp Drier, CPA and President of Cheatham County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors organized Monday’s candlelight prayer vigil.

Drier opened the vigil with appreciation for the outpouring of love and support for Mayor McCullough, his wife Megan McCullough, and family.  Pastor Drake Jenkins with Ashland City Church of Christ opened with the first prayer of the night.  He prayed for God’s will to be done, healing and comfort for the McCullough family, community and friends.

Danny Stewart, elder from Pegram Church of Christ, followed by praying and citing Psalms 27:1, stating the scripture was representative of how the McCullough’s lived their life.

The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? – Psalm 27:1

Jeff Bennett, Youth Pastor from Ashland City Free Will Baptist Church and Executive Director of Habitat of Humanity prayed for intervention and direction for the community to share words of encouragement, comfort and love for the McCullough family.

“our thoughts, hearts and prayers are with him today,” Pastor Jeff Bennett.

Mayor McCullough’s daughter Elizabeth Strunk spoke, with her husband Andrew Strunk by her side, addressing the community on behalf of her father and family, extending gratitude and appreciation for the love and support shown to them during this difficult time.

“This past week we had some very devastating news…his cancer is back, aggressive and currently untreatable…We’ve asked you to pray for us before and we are asking again.  We want to ask you to help us pray for strength, peace, comfort and healing for my dad and us as we go through this because it’s not going to be easy.   He’s your not only you mayor, but he’s your friend, he’s part of your Cheatham County Family… we’ve had a year and a half of such joy and memories, since his last surgery and we’re so blessed to have had that time together.  We’ve seen miracle after miracle happen and through all that we refuse to live in defeat from cancer…we want to continue living every single day with joy and happiness together…unfortunately with the manner of his cancer, it’s not a typical cancer, if you can even call any cancer typical; it’s very rare, and so we don’t have a lot of answers.  I thank you all for understanding the unknowns are there, it can be scary and that it’s difficult but since the very beginning we have prayed and tucked in our hearts that my dad will live every single day that God has ordained for him to live and I pray that for you as well.” -Elizabeth   STRUNK

She continued by sharing the following scripture verse:

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 – 16Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

“We ask each of you not to lose heart, I pray inwardly that each of you are renewed every day; this life is just temporary for all of us, none of us know our time limits but we’re choosing to fix our eyes on the things unseen, we’re choosing hope and joy and through all of this we are choosing life through Jesus.”

She concluded once more with appreciation, love and gratitude toward the outpouring of love, support and prayers for her dad and family this past week, requesting they continue in the days ahead.
