Cheatham County Director of Schools, Dr. Stan Curtis’s contract, interim director and director of schools search will be discussed during a Special Called Meeting, Thursday, October 27, at 5:30 p.m. in the Annex Building at Ashland City Elementary school.

On Monday, October 3, board member Jennifer Hamlin made a motion to seek Curtis’ immediate resignation as director of schools in exchange for his remaining salary in the amount of $57,598.50, one of his past accrued bonuses in the amount of $15 thousand and to use paid vacation leave until the agreement was signed.  The motion was approved by an unanimous vote by all six board members.

If Curtis accepted the terms of the resignation school board members will proceed in appointing an interim director of schools until a thorough search for a new director can be conducted.

Jeremy Qualls, ED.S, Principal and Education Consultant with TEAM Inc., out of Centerville, Tennessee, recommended by member David Bibee, addressed board members during the October 3, meeting about working with school district to find a qualified director fitting the needs of the school system.

According to Qualls it typically takes a minimum of ninety-days to conduct a proper search, facilitate and schedule interviews and negotiations to fulfill a director of schools position. He recommended the board begin their search, if Curtis’ accepted the terms of his resignation, at the first of the year.

Qualls is one of three options the board could decide to go with to search for a new director. The two additional options include working with TSBA – Tennessee State Board Association or independently conducting a search as members of Cheatham County School Board. It was the consensus of board members to not independently conduct a search but rather hire and/or work with an outside entity.

Board member John Louallen stated at the last board meeting they would await Curtis’ decision on the presented motion before making any decisions on naming an interim director or which option to use to search for a new director of schools

School board members will be addressing Curtis’ decision to accept or decline the resignation, stipulations of pending contract, appointing an interim director and new director search during Thursday special called meeting at 5:30 p.m. prior to their monthly workshop.

The public is encouraged to attend workshops, held on the last Thursday of each month starting at 6:00 p.m. and board meetings held the first Monday of each month beginning at 7:00 p.m.
